More About Joe
Clients with significant domestic and international intellectual property portfolios turn to Joe when they need to protect new and innovative technologies, exploit competitive differentiators, assert their intellectual property rights against others, avoid infringement of others' protectable rights, and defend against others’ infringement allegations. When clients are involved in intellectual property disputes, Joe's goal is to meet the clients' objectives efficiently, while minimizing the impact to their business. To do this, he leverages both his substantive experience and the firm’s resources. He has handled intellectual property lawsuits, on both the plaintiffs' and defendants' side, in a number of district and appellate courts throughout the country, including the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the US Patent and Trademark Office's internal review processes, and the US International Trade Commission.
He works with clients to procure meaningful intellectual property protection, either through patents, trademarks, copyrights, or trade secrets, assessing the existing landscape for patentability or infringement of others' rights. If problems are found, he assists the client in avoiding others' legal rights, which may include providing invalidity or non-infringement opinions, and working with the clients' engineers to create design-arounds. Joe also works with a vast network of international foreign counsel to obtain international intellectual property protection, when needed. He also uses technology to enhance the value of his advice to clients. One example is the customizable web-based invention disclosure tool that Joe created with the firm’s IT department, which clients use to submit new inventions for review, patent application processing and tracking purposes. This tool allows for advance internal review processes, ensuring Joe’s advice is applied at the right time and at the highest level.
Joe was a design engineer and information technology specialist before obtaining his law degree, giving him valuable insight into the business needs and expectations of clients, and the innovation process itself. He is now a registered US Patent Attorney and assist clients to obtain the broadest protection possible within the US and internationally.
Joe enjoys being part of a firm with a vast platform and expansive resources across many offices. If a client has a problem outside his area of legal acumen, he can easily find someone who has handled a similar issue and can provide assistance.
