Linda Schoonmaker has defended employers for almost thirty years in lawsuits, arbitrations and administrative charges brought by employees and governmental agencies throughout the country. Described in the 2013 edition of Legal 500 as “one of the best and brightest lawyers anywhere”, and by a contributor to the 2009 edition as " one of the most competent and capable trial lawyers I've ever encountered", Ms. Schoonmaker has been Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in Labor and Employment Law since 1994, and is a member of the College of the State Bar of Texas. In addition to employment litigation defense involving all forms of discrimination, wage/hour, and whistleblower claims, she provides counseling and training to employers regarding employment policies and state and federal laws impacting the employment relationship, manages OSHA and EEOC investigations, and prosecutes and defends non-competition/trade secrets litigation.  In 2014, the Texas Medical Liability Trust selected Ms. Schoonmaker to develop and conduct its Continuing Medical Education programs on employment and false claims act issues for physicians practicing throughout the State of Texas.

Ms. Schoonmaker has practiced law at Seyfarth Shaw in the Houston office for the past seventeen years, and is a partner in the firm’s Labor & Employment Department. She has served on the Seyfarth Shaw Women’s National Leadership Team, and in March 2013, the Texas Women Lawyers honored Ms. Schoonmaker with its Pathfinder Award.

Community Involvement

Ms. Schoonmaker has lived in Sugar Land since 1982, and is very active in non-profit organizations in her Fort Bend County community. She completed a six year term, including two years as Board President, on the Board of Directors of the Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse, Inc.  (FBRC) (substance abuse prevention and treatment), recently rejoined that Board, and currently serves again as its Board President. In February 2012, FBRC awarded Ms. Schoonmaker the Helen Cordes Award for her dedication and commitment to substance abuse prevention in Fort Bend County.  Ms. Schoonmaker completed her second six year term as a member of the Board of Directors of the Fort Bend County Women’s Center (domestic violence programs, shelter and housing) in December 2014, was named the Board member of the year for 2014 and also served as Board President of that organization during 2011. 

Ms. Schoonmaker also is a the Board President of Achieve Fort Bend County (high school dropout prevention), a member and former Board member of the Exchange Club of Sugar Land (service club), an Advisory Board member of Texana Center (services for differently-abled children and adults), and a Friends Council and Grant Committee member of Fort Bend Cares (serving disadvantaged children and youth of Fort Bend County).  In 2009, Ms. Schoonmaker was recognized by the Houston Texans football organization and the Halliburton Foundation as a “Hometown Hero” for her work in her community. She also serves as pro bono employment counsel to numerous non-profit agencies in Fort Bend and Harris County.
