Please join us for a half or full day program to learn the fundamentals of labor law.
Knowledge of labor law is essential to the practice of HR professionals, in-house employment lawyers, and legal generalists, whether or not you have unions in your workplace. The National Labor Relations Act applies to all employers, and employers are at risk for litigation and other problems when they lack an understanding of this increasingly changing area.
This program is designed for HR professionals, employment lawyers, legal generalists, and other managers in both union and non-union companies. The morning session will focus on labor topics applicable to all employers; the afternoon session will focus on providing a deeper understanding of specific labor issues faced by those who work in a unionized environment.
Among the topics to be covered:
- The labor law issues that should be considered in every discipline and discharge decision
- Ensuring that company policies and handbooks comply with the National Labor Relations Act
- What to do when EEO law and labor law collide
- Labor law issues involved in investigatory interviews
- How to handle handbilling, picketing and trespass issues
- Understanding the labor issues involved in responding to non-union and union employee demonstrations, rallies, and walkouts
- Labor law issues involved in business transactions
- Understanding collective bargaining agreements
- Mandatory subjects of bargaining and determining when an employer can change policies and procedures without bargaining with the union
- The Do's and Don'ts of responding to union information requests
- Practical tips for responding to grievances and preparing for arbitrations
- The labor law "traps" that exist after a contract has expired and before a first contract is negotiated
Lunch will be provided. CLE credit is available for one or both sessions
