The Boston office was opened in 1999 with two partners and five associates. The office has experienced substantial growth since then with a large group of lawyers joining the firm in 2001 as a result of a merger with the corporate firm Chappell White. In the spring of 2002, the firm added immigration and labor and employment teams from Palmer & Dodge. Additional partner acquisitions created the foundation for a commercial litigation practice in the office and in December 2002 the office added an additional group of lawyers from Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP. The Boston office is now the firm’s third largest office.
Community Service
In addition to our pro bono legal work, the Boston office is proud to participate in many community service projects. The flagship charity of the Boston office is Best Buddies International, an organization dedicated to helping those with intellectual disabilities. Because our office has a number of families touched by intellectual disabilities, many of our staff and attorneys are personally connected to this wonderful organization and we have a special and personal interest in helping. In addition to serving on local and national Best Buddies Boards and being individual volunteers, most of our office participates in Audi Best Buddies Challenge Hyannis Port bike ride. As part of our commitment, we also provide free office space to Best Buddies, and proudly employ three Best Buddies in our office.
We are also one of the largest corporate participants in Boston for the Department of Social Service's Children’s Gift Drive, providing gifts to children in state custody and living necessities for impoverished families. In 2007, the firm sponsored 175 children, and anticipates sponsoring the same number in 2008.
We sponsor a book for the National Braille Press, the nation’s leading Braille printing company, serving a critical need at a time when fiscal difficulties have threatened educational programs for visually handicapped students.
Along with our New York office, Boston is involved with Jumpstart, an organization that pairs up pre-school students with an adult mentor to help develop literacy and social growth. In 2007, our donations purchased books for more than 600 Jumpstart students. A group of volunteers also participated in Read for the Record, a campaign designed by Jumpstart to bring attention to the importance of early education. In 2008, we sponsored a graduation ceremony for Jumpstart students.
The office organized a coalition of legal service providers and sponsored (and staffed) tables to provide a variety of legal services in the Dudley Square community in Dorchester. We also volunteered in a local food bank, worked in a pre-school, and arranged to have Seyfarth lawyers, paralegals, and staff take tours of the neighborhood, provided by local organizations. All in all, we served more than one hundred clients. We will do our second Dudley Day in August of 2008.
Other organizations that we support include Turkey’s 4 America and Pie in the Sky for Community Servings, to make sure those in need enjoy turkey and pie on Thanksgiving Day.
