Seyfarth Shaw first opened its New York office in 1979 with seven attorneys. Today, we have over 100 attorneys in New York, many of whom are also admitted to practice in New Jersey and Connecticut. In July of 2007, the office moved to 100,000 square feet of space in the newly constructed New York Times building, confirming the commitment of the firm to the continued expansion and strength of our New York presence. The space will be able to accommodate the office’s continued expansion, and features a state-of-the-art conference center that allows us to offer our clients continual updates on issues that affect their businesses through breakfast briefings and conferences. Spanning three stories in the Renzo Piano-designed building, the office reflects the attention to detail we provide to our clients in a collaborative culture that encourages teamwork and sustained growth, and reflects our national reputation as a premier full-service law firm.
Practices represented in the New York office include: Bankruptcy, Workouts & Business Reorganization; Commercial Class Action Defense; Commercial Litigation; Corporate; Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation; Labor & Employment; Real Estate; Securities & Financial Litigation; Structured & Real Estate Finance; Tax; and Trade Secrets, Computer Fraud, & Non-Competes.
Community Service
The New York office is committed to providing pro bono legal services, supporting important civic and bar events, volunteering, and helping to raise money for worthy causes. The office supports many local and national minority bar associations, providing both financial assistance and the active involvement of our attorneys, and takes great pride in our commitment to pro bono work. In fact, virtually every attorney in the New York office (99%) worked on a pro bono project in 2007.
The New York office’s flagship charity is Jumpstart. Founded in 1993 with 15 college students working with 15 preschoolers, Jumpstart is now a national leader in early childhood education, engaging 3,500 college students in service to more than 13,000 children in 20 states and nearly 70 communities across the country. Jumpstart pairs specially trained college students with young children in one-to-one partnerships that are uniquely designed to develop literacy, language, and social skills. We support the organization financially as well as through volunteer participation by attorneys and staff.
Other examples of our office’s commitment to community service include the following: working with New York Cares on a coat drive; volunteering with Habitat for Humanity; participating in City Harvest’s “Feed the Kids” campaign, and raising thousands of dollars annually for breast cancer research through our participation in Lee National Denim Day®, and for UNCF (United Negro College Fund) through a Seyfarth-initiated fundraiser. In December of 2007, the office also hosted the first annual “Santa Comes to Seyfarth” holiday party for 120 kindergarten and first grade students from a public school in the Bronx.
