Seyfarth Shaw LLP announced today the arrival of partner Gordon F. Peery to chair its Derivatives Practice and work as a member of its Real Estate practice from his office in Los Angeles. Peery arrives from Canada’s largest law firm, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, where he served as Global Derivatives Advisor. Prior to that position, he was a partner at K&L Gates LLP in Boston and Orange County, California.

Peery is among a limited number of derivatives lawyers worldwide who specialize in derivatives transactional and regulatory work for clients in investment management, real estate, energy, financial services, commodities and other industries. Members of Congress, Congressional staff and regulators in other jurisdictions have sought Gordon’s legal knowledge on derivatives and financial services reform. His clients include global asset managers, pensions, energy and real estate development companies.

“Gordon is an established finance practitioner in investment management and real estate, and in a range of other practice areas, and he brings great depth in both the regulatory and transactional spaces following Dodd Frank, not only in derivatives but in structured finance,” said Paul Mattingly, chair of Seyfarth’s Real Estate department. “Gordon will be a great resource for our lender and borrower clients."

“We are thrilled to welcome Gordon to our dynamic Southern California team,” said Richard Mendelson, co-managing partner of Seyfarth’s Los Angeles office. “Gordon joins supremely talented real estate and corporate teams and we are excited to see his continued success. Gordon was a strategic hire designed to further build out a financial services regulatory practice, and we are elated that one of the leading practitioners in financial services reform has joined us.”

A frequent writer and lecturer, Peery is the author of The Post-Reform Guide to Derivatives and Futures, which was published by John Wiley & Sons and won the 2012 International Book Awards in the category of Law. Peery’s book has been used as a textbook at Columbia Law School and Georgetown Law School, where he has guest lectured. He has also lectured throughout the U.S. and Canada, London, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, Brunei and Hong Kong on effective ways to trade derivatives in the existing regulatory environment. A fluent speaker of Japanese, Peery received his J.D. from Vanderbilt Law School and his B.A. in International Relations from the University of Southern California.

“Our office is looking forward to collaborating with Gordon as we continue to expand our local footprint in California as well as throughout the Pacific Rim and in other leading markets where Gordon regularly practices for real estate, energy, investment management and other clients,” said Aaron Lubeley, co-managing partner of Seyfarth’s Los Angeles office.

With more than 140 real estate lawyers across the country, Seyfarth has one of the largest real estate practices in the United States. Both national and local in scope, Seyfarth provides a full range of services including development, construction, leasing, acquisitions, dispositions, financing, joint ventures, and hospitality and leisure.
