A clear and documented process enables clients and outside counsel to identify and more directly focus on the most critical and strategic aspects of a matter. Process improvement can also offer clients opportunities to build consensus and manage change.
A key tool in our delivery of process improvement is process mapping. Many legal engagements—from routine to complex legal work—follow a standard process or sequence of actions. Process maps allow teams to define and document each step of a standard legal process, integrating quality assurance procedures and control mechanisms into every step. To create a process map, one of our trained Legal Project Managers facilitates a live session in which key stakeholders and our lawyers gather to address each step of the process—from current state to desired future state. By working through each step, the team can ensure that the overall approach is streamlined, wasteful steps have been eliminated, efficiency has been increased and the appropriate technology solutions have been deployed with job aids for efficient execution of tasks (document templates, guidelines, checklists). During the process, the team builds in control mechanisms to ensure people are working in the most efficient, effective way, as agreed upon with the client. Process maps also help us develop budgets, project plans, task lists, time estimates for those tasks and workflow.
