Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy

Since 2019, Seyfarth has been a member of Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy, which aims to provide pro bono legal services to sustainability-focused nonprofit organizations and small businesses. This initiative is facilitated by Stanford Law School and Stanford’s Precourt Institute for Energy, and participating law firms provide a range of legal services to clients, including corporate governance, contracts, real estate, intellectual property, privacy policies, terms of use, and employment advice.

Since joining Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy, Seyfarth has provided over $1.7 million in free legal services to qualifying sustainability-focused nonprofit organizations and small businesses. Each year since 2021, we have had an annual goal of providing $350,000 in such services, and we regularly exceeded that goal.

Highlights of the Program

Here are just a few highlights from our participation in Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy over the past three years:

In 2021, Seyfarth attorneys in our Chicago office provided pro bono legal services to Passive House Institute US (Phius), a nonprofit organization working toward a zero-carbon built environment, and which certifies the majority of all passive house projects in North America. Attorneys from our Labor and Employment department assisted Phius in drafting and revising their initial employee handbook.

In 2022, our attorneys provided pro bono legal services to Washington Wild, a nonprofit organization that protects wild lands and rivers in Washington State through advocacy, education, and civic engagement. Seyfarth attorneys from multiple offices provided Washington Wild with advice and counseling in the areas of corporate governance and ADA website accessibility issues.

In 2023, Seyfarth provided pro bono legal services to Metasorbex Corporation via a referral from Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy. Metasorbex works to solve carbon emissions by nanomaterials-based carbon capture technologies, and a partner in our DC office with a background in chemistry and nanotubes assisted Metasorbex with filing a provisional patent application for a materials (compositions) technology.
