Bart Lazar Highlighted in IP Law360 "IP Lawyers Take Active Role Against Counterfeiters"
Bart Lazar was highlighted in the article, "IP Lawyers Take Active Role Against Counterfeiters," published in the August 13, 2008 issue of IP Law360. The article showcased IP lawyers who have gone to great lengths to enforce their clients' trademarks by taking a more active role outside the courtroom. Bart has personally served sellers of knockoff Motorola, Playboy, Chanel and other goods with more than 100 seizure orders in multiple states over the last 20 years. He remarked, “My goal is to put counterfeiters out of business….” In the context of trade shows, when counterfeiting products are particularly prevalent, Bart noted, “I want to clean up a show so that my client no longer needs my services.” He further explained that it’s not always easy to serve seizure orders. “I’ve had people try to hit me, light their products on fire and had their attack dogs come after me,” he added.
Bart noted that, “It is a continuing problem for trademark owners to always be vigilant. Counterfeiters will try different means depending on how creative, aggressive and strategic they are, and owners always have to have their eyes open.” Bart further noted that he encourages clients to consider counterfeiters as early as the product development stage. He concluded, “If you can’t tell fake from genuine, you may not be able to stop counterfeiting from taking place.”
