Boston, MA (September 25, 2006) - - Seyfarth Shaw LLP, one of America’s leading full service law firms, announced that Kevin P. McGrath has joined the firm’s Securities & Financial Litigation practice as a partner in the Boston office. McGrath is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney in both the District of Massachusetts and the Eastern District of New York, as well as a former Massachusetts Assistant Attorney General. He was most recently counsel with Goodwin Procter in Boston.
McGrath focuses his practice on white collar criminal defense and internal investigations, securities and other complex civil litigation and federal and state tax litigation. During his tenure as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Massachusetts (1994 – 2004), McGrath was Chief of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force for four years, supervising an 18 attorney unit. He oversaw all drug and money laundering prosecutions, prosecuted multi-defendant international drug trafficking and money laundering organizations, served as lead prosecutor for numerous trials, and argued extensively before the First Circuit Court of Appeals. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of New York (1989-1994), he prosecuted high-ranking members of the Luchese, Colombo, Gambino and Genovese Organized Crime Families for racketeering, murder in aid of racketeering, bid-rigging, extortion, loan sharking, illegal gaming, tax evasion and drug trafficking. He also prosecuted numerous other drug trafficking, mail fraud, embezzlement and computer fraud cases.
"Kevin is an exceptionally talented white collar attorney and a wonderful addition to our practice and the firm's partnership," said Michael R. Levinson, chair of the Firm's national Litigation Department. "He is an effective and accomplished trial lawyer who is well-respected in the legal community. Kevin's experience and knowledge will provide significant support to the counsel we provide our clients."
Seyfarth Shaw’s securities and financial litigation practice has a successful track record defending companies and individual officers and directors in a wide variety of securities matters, including: claims under the Securities Exchange Act, the Securities Act, ERISA, the Williams Act, RICO and state fiduciary duty laws; shareholder derivative actions; Department of Justice (“DOJ”), Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) and National Association of Securities Dealers investigations and proceedings; private class actions alleging violations of state and federal securities laws; and insider trading, stock options dating or other market timing allegations. The practice’s attorneys have represented public companies, their officers and outside accounting firms in a number of highly-publicized corporate investigations and have appeared before the SEC, the DOJ and the U.S. Congress in connection with these matters. They advise clients on Sarbanes-Oxley compliance issues and assist in risk assessments, audits and liability avoidance programs. In conjunction with the firm’s labor and employment practice, the attorneys are also experienced in handling ERISA/401k stock drop class actions, as well as disciplinary, whistleblower and related employee issues that often arise under Sarbanes-Oxley.
"Kevin is a fantastic addition to the firm and the securities litigation practice," stated Lisa J. Damon, managing partner of Seyfarth’s Boston office. "His early career as a high profile prosecutor and successful tenure in private practice is a solid platform for the litigation skills he brings to Seyfarth Shaw. We are delighted he is joining us and we welcome him."
McGrath received his B.A. in English Literature from Columbia College and earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School. He is admitted to the bar in Massachusetts and New York.
