Please join Seyfarth Shaw LLP as we host state and local healthcare leaders in an industry summit focusing on workforce issues. The Healthcare Workforce Summit will feature Bernie Duco, David Lopez, Steve Murdock, Ph.D., Dr. Ken Shine, and Representative John Zerwas, M.D.
Agenda

Current Healthcare Needs. Dr. Murdock will discuss the current healthcare needs of Texans, as well as the predicted healthcare sector workforce supply and demand concerns as a result of healthcare reform.

Imbalance Between Supply and Demand. Dr. Shine will provide a brief summary of the different strategies Texas (and specifically UT) is implementing to address the imbalance between provider supply and patient demand.
- Access to Care and Industry Response. Dr. Murdock and Dr. Shine will participate in a panel discussion with Bernie Duco, David Lopez, and Representative John Zerwas, M.D. to focus on patient access to care and the industry's response to these issues.
In addition, stakeholders such as healthcare system executives, administrators, and governmental officials will discuss such strategies in the wake of healthcare reform, including the implications of these changes on the healthcare workforce. Bernie Duco is Chief Legal Officer of Memorial Hermann Health System. Prior to joining Memorial Hermann, Mr. Duco served as senior vice president and general counsel of Sisters of Mercy Health System in St. Louis for 15 years. Prior to joining Mercy, Mr. Duco was a partner with the Houston law firm of Wood, Lucksinger and Epstein, representing a broad range of healthcare organizations. David S. Lopez, FACHE, is President and CEO of the Harris County Hospital District, the fifth largest metropolitan public healthcare system in the nation. He is a respected community leader with more than 28 years of administrative healthcare experience. He became permanent President and CEO of the Harris County Hospital District in April 2004 after nearly a year as its interim President and CEO. Before assuming his duties as President and CEO, Mr. Lopez helped lead many initiatives to strengthen the fiscal health of the Harris County Hospital District and improve the health of the community. His work as Chief Operating Officer was vital in creating strategic partnerships with business, industry and community leaders to ensure that the Harris County Hospital District receives all state and federal funds needed to improve patient access to primary and specialty care. Steve Murdock, Ph.D. is the founding Director of the Hobby Center for the Study of Texas, Dr. Murdock holds the Allyn and Gladys Cline Chair in Sociology at Rice University. He is the former Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, The State Demographer of Texas, holder of a Regents Chair at Texas A&;M University, The Lutcher Brown Distinguished Chair in Demography and Organization Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio, and a noted scholar with 13 books and more than 150 articles and analytical reports. He is also noted in applied and Texas governmental circles having been named as one of the 50 most influential Texans by Texas Business in 1997 and one of the 25 most influential Texans by Texas Monthly in 2005. He has extensive experience in research on a wide variety of issues impacting Texas and is widely known as a national expert in the areas of Demography, Rural Sociology and Socioeconomic Impact Assessment. Dr. Kenneth Shine currently serves as the Special Advisor to the Chancellor at the University of Texas System and previously served as the System's Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs. Prior to his role at the University of Texas System, he served as President of the Institute of Medicine (IOM), from 1992 to 2002 where he concentrated his attention on meeting the healthcare needs of all Americans including organizing a symposia to underscore the importance of cultural sensitivity in healthcare, supporting programs to increase immunization rates, decrease use of tobacco among adolescents, and to improve care of the dying. He emphasized communication of scientific findings and recommendations. Under his guidance, IOM staff developed CDs, videotapes, guidelines for community-based research, and publications for researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and the public. Dr. Shine is a member of many honorary and academic societies, including Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha, Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Master of the American College of Physicians, and was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 1988. Dr. John Zerwas represents the people of the 28th District in the Texas House of Representatives. A physician for over 25 years, he is one of only two doctors in the House at a time when Health and Human Services consumes roughly 40 percent of the state budget and is the fastest growing area of spending. Dr. Zerwas is an anesthesiologist with Greater Houston Anesthesiologists, a large group he began several years ago. He has served as the Chief Medical Officer of the Memorial Hermann Healthcare System in Houston and as such oversaw programs that have improved the outcomes of patients with certain medical conditions while also reducing the cost of treating those conditions.
