NEW YORK – March 13, 2025Seyfarth Shaw LLP, a pioneer in legal innovation for over two decades, announces its alliance with CodeX, the renowned center for legal informatics at Stanford University. Together, Seyfarth and CodeX will combine leading technology and resources to accelerate the research, development, and implementation of industry-leading tools to help resolve the most complex legal and business issues impacting Seyfarth’s clients.

“Since our inception 80 years ago, Seyfarth has led the legal industry in client-centric innovation. We were among the first firms to embrace the use of technology into every aspect of our practice, from lawyer training and development, matter management, predictive analytics, document automation, alternative billing, and most significantly, enhanced client service delivery,” said Lorie Almon, Seyfarth Chair and Managing Partner. “Our partnership with CodeX will augment our ability to integrate cutting edge technology—including AI—into strategic, impactful solutions at an even more rapid pace, as we remain at the forefront of legal innovation.”

Seyfarth has been a leader in legal innovation since 2005 when it began its journey with a series of industry firsts. It was among the first Big Law firms to inject Lean Six Sigma concepts into the practice of law through a program called SeyfarthLean. This helped fuel an industry-wide reassessment of practices to measure client value.

In the same year, Seyfarth also launched a Legal Project Management Office (another industry first) to lead planning and execution on complex legal matters and large portfolios, delivering enhanced value and a better client experience. The firm continued this trend, eventually introducing its Seyfarth Link collaboration platform—another industry first that resulted in the firm winning the ILTA 2013 Innovative Project of the Year and Innovative Law Firm of the Year awards.

In 2016, the firm established Seyfarth Labs as one of the first law firm innovation incubators where lawyers, technologists, and data experts collaborate to test and deploy cutting-edge solutions in AI, process automation, and data analytics to enhance legal operations. Seyfarth Labs is now a team of more than 20 innovation professionals, comprised of legal technologists, software engineers and data analysts. Seyfarth Labs explores and tests how emerging technologies like AI and automation affect legal services, built on the belief that technology, when coupled with legal excellence, mastery of the legal process, and a robust understanding of human nature, drives greatness.

To help drive the use of process automation, Seyfarth Labs built a Center of Excellence to help bring automation, AI, and bot techniques to the business. Groundbreaking advances in the use of robotics software led to the firm again being named as ILTA’s Innovative Law Firm of the Year in 2017. Seyfarth, which continued to be a leading innovator among law firms, was recognized by the Financial Times in 2024 as one of the most innovative law firms in North America (for the 11thtime) and that same year named by BTI Consulting Group as a Best of the Best Leading Edge Law Firm.

“Seyfarth Labs stands out as a key collaborator in developing and integrating solutions that effectively address the challenges faced by its clients,” remarked Dr. Megan Ma, Associate Director at CodeX and Stanford’s Law, Science, and Technology Program. “We are eager to work together to enhance the role of technology in the legal industry and explore innovative, impactful solutions that produce real results.”

“CodeX is a leading innovator in legal tech, bringing together expertise from a variety of fields,” noted Byong Kim, Seyfarth’s newly named Chief Data & AI Officer. “Similar to Seyfarth, for 20 years, CodeX’s team has developed creative solutions that push our industry forward. We’re excited to team up with them over the next three years to build new products and processes as we continue to lead in the advancement of integrating technology in the legal space.”

“We’re excited to welcome Seyfarth as another star addition to our CodeX Affiliate Program. Their collaboration solidifies the program’s mission to advance frontier technology in law firms and the law more broadly,” stated Dr. Roland Vogl, Executive Director at CodeX and Stanford’s Law, Science, and Technology Program.
