About the Program

Not surprisingly, the early months of a new presidential administration can be tumultuous, as government agencies, their representatives, and stakeholders—employers, employees, and their advocates—try to ascertain which of a new president’s campaign trail promises were merely rhetoric and which might become law.

The Trump Administration’s bold strides into a naturally chaotic environment have—in some instances—invigorated an atypically robust debate around the future of employee pay laws, how they will be enforced, and whether the administration’s actions might trigger a ripple effect of litigation seeking a toehold in the uncertainty and in the backlash against the rollback of decades-old worker protections that some view as antiquated and contrary to the capitalist ideals that serve as the foundation for this great American experiment.

Join our panelists for a lively discussion of how all of this might affect the evolution of state and federal wage & hour law, and government enforcement and litigation under it. Hot topics will include:

  • The ongoing debate over federal contractor minimum wage requirements,
  • The FLSA’s overtime exemptions and the U.S. Department of Labor’s ability to revise them,
  • The question of whether overtime wages should be excluded from state or federal taxes, and
  • Trends in state and federal court litigation and government enforcement activity.

There’s a lot to talk about; and we certainly won’t get to it all. But please join our panelists for a primer on the evolving wage & hour landscape, and plan to follow up with specific questions on topics we don’t get to during our panel discussion.
