More About Kathleen

Data Privacy. Kathleen has significant experience counseling companies regarding data protection, information security, analytics, and AI. Her areas of privacy knowledge include advising on domestic state level privacy and compliance work (including CCPA/CPRA); defending against CIPA (California’s Invasion of Privacy Act) claims; analyzing website-related disclosures; counseling on international cross-border privacy and compliance; and advising on information governance and record retention.

Data Science. Further, as lead of the data science group, Kathleen's work in spearheading Seyfarth’s use of data science in litigation and counseling matters has contributed to keeping the firm on the cutting edge of the legal practice. Her innovative work in this area has enabled the firm to obtain favorable settlements for clients, reduce significant areas of potential liability, and undermine class certification arguments.

eDiscovery. Kathleen also focuses her practice on eDiscovery and related matters. Her eDiscovery litigation experience has ranged from cases involving a small number of data points and custodians to complex matters involving several hundred individuals and complicated database and storage environments. In addition, she regularly advises clients on developing cost-effective strategies for the preservation, collection, review, and production of electronically stored information, including for cross-border matters.

Presentations. Kathleen has presented and published on numerous privacy, artificial intelligence, eDiscovery, analytics, and information governance topics including: the conundrum of cookies in connection with California’s Invasion of Privacy Act; the future of analytical strategies; using data analysis to find hidden information; the effect of AI and emerging technologies on the workplace and eDiscovery; GDPR, CCPA, and CIPA compliance; best practices for legal holds, document preservation, and collection; efficient use of case management tools; and strategies for reducing eDiscovery-related costs.

Certifications. Kathleen is a member of the firm’s AI Task Force and Global Privacy & Security Team, and holds two certifications from the International Association of Privacy Professionals - Certified Information Privacy Professional / United States and Certified Information Privacy Professional / Europe.

Pro Bono & Organizations. She is a member of the San Francisco Chapter of Women in eDiscovery. She is committed to serving the community through pro bono work. Her contributions in this area have been recognized on several occasions, including by The Justice and Diversity Center of the Bar Association of San Francisco, as she was a recipient of its Outstanding Volunteer in Public Service Award for 2010 and 2013.
