Government Relations & Policy
Policy issues often have long-term, widespread, and pervasive impact on businesses. Not only can new governmental policies put a damper on business innovation and growth, they create precedents that affect future legislation and potentially spread across jurisdictions. As a firm known for innovation, we are your ideal partner for educating policymakers on the potentially adverse impacts policy changes can have on industry growth and what’s next in the competitive marketplace—so you can continue to expand.
HOW WE HELP
Policy issues with broad, long-term implications require thoughtful, comprehensive solutions. Our Government Relations & Policy group helps businesses of all sizes overcome regulatory challenges, leading the way in public policy with a keen focus on emerging risk for clients in all sectors. Our team advises clients on when it is best to directly or quietly oppose new initiatives or when compromise is necessary. This analysis requires substantive, public relations, and political calculations only a seasoned and experienced team can provide.
Based out of our Washington, DC office, our Government Relations & Policy group includes former high-level officials from the US Chamber of Commerce, the US Department of Labor, the US Department of Justice, the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, Capitol Hill, and the California legislature. With extensive experience in labor and employment laws, immigration, and other areas of evolving risk, our team is well-positioned to jump in when circumstances call for swift action. Our team regularly taps the firm’s extensive contacts to strategize a game plan for Capitol Hill and the Executive Branch to defeat or amend proposed legislation and regulations that can negatively affect our clients and their industries as a whole.
Our attorneys constantly scan the horizon for legal issues and challenges facing clients, harnessing the power of the entire firm to influence change. Over the years, members of our team have played major roles in labor, equal employment opportunity, wage and hour, OFCCP, and immigration developments. Our bench empowers clients with a deep understanding of the players and procedures, and allows us to effectively advocate for their interests and act quickly on urgent matters.
THE SEYFARTH EXPERIENCE
Our attorneys use leading-edge tools and resources to scan, monitor, and predict potential conflicts and opportunities that can be passed along to clients. The team adeptly distills problems into succinct, factually accurate data to influence the decisions of key audiences, from legislators and regulators to employees and the public. With an experienced team of attorneys who have testified before Congress, authored policy issue white papers and amicus briefs, and published studies and reports, our practice helps clients play the long game to ensure that future policy promotes innovation, ingenuity, and common sense. This has been a platform of proven performance which has built trust amongst policymakers.
To aid clients with these challenges and opportunities, our attorneys build coalitions with organizations and individuals who focus on employer issues. They also collaborate with other Seyfarth practice groups, such as labor and employment, employee benefits, corporate, and securities.
Among the companies our Government Relations & Policy team has represented and counseled:
- A software developer with a product that enables prospective employees to remotely interview via a cell phone facing state legislation that threatened its business model.
- Numerous trade associations in preparing amicus briefs and other documentation on behalf of the employer community on the implementation of equal employment opportunity reporting requirements affecting companies with 100 or more employees.
- The United States Chamber of Commerce on OFCCP regulatory matters.
- Numerous companies on wage and hour regulatory issues, including comments on pending regulations.
- The Society for Human Resource Management on immigration, international standards analysis, and pending employment legislation on Capitol Hill.
- The Retail Industry Leaders Association on gig economy/independent contractor issues, including standing up a new coalition.
